Trap Door cleaning Rod
Are there any cleaning rods listed on the auction side for the model 1878 Trap Door Springfield long rifle? I can't seem to find any.

I couldn't find any. 0 -
Dixie Gun Works. 2013 catalog pg 146. Item RPO100 Ramrod, not threaded
M1873-M1878 rifle $25.95
There is also a 3 piece cleaning rod for the carbine.
Note: These appear to be reproductions.0 -
There is no Model 1878 Springfield Trap Door. Some 1873s appear to be stamped as such but a close examination will show that the 3 is just deeply stamped so as to appear to be an 8.
Reproduction 1873 cleaning rods (called ramrods) are easy to find. The jointed 3-piece for a carbine is a bit more difficult. Originals are around also but take a bit more digging to find.0 -
Ok, my mistake, It sure looked like a 78 to me. I will try the Dixie idea, thanks 0 -

Truthful is being...well...truthful! There is no Model 1878.
If you want an original replacement, you can get one from Al Frasca at http://www.trapdoorcollector.com/
By the way: Al does mention a "Model 1878" but that's only to represent production changes to the Model 1873 in 1878. There were numerous changes to the Trapdoor Springfield during its lifetime. You'll also see Model 1888 but that refers to upgrades to the Model 1884.
Clear as mud, eh? [;)]
It's best to send Al your serial number at afrasca@erinet.com and he will match up the correct cleaning rod to your rifle.0 -
Thanks Spider, I will e-mail the person you mentioned and see what he has. 0 -

You're welcome. Al literally wrote the book on Trapdoor Springfields (several, actually), so he will definitely get you the correct rod.
