1911 Firing Pin Issue
I adjusted the tension on the extractor using a Weigand jig. Previously I stripped the entire gun for polishing, honing etc. There wasn't a problem with the firing pin lining up with the insert that holds it and the extractor in place. Now, however, the firing pin won't line up with the hole of the insert. The end of the pin slides towards the top of the slide enough that it cannot pop through the insert.
I've polished the backside of the insert and unsuccessfully tried to guide the pin into the hole with an awl. The firing pin has a slight bevel. This gave me the idea of slightly beveling the hole on the backside of the insert.
What's your advice?

Don't fix it if it isn't broke.[:p]
Can you post a pic of what's going on.
Maybe there is some left over compound in the hole. Q-tip and good solvent. Turn the FP spring around0 -
I'm betting we have a winner!

Assumptions on my part:
You are speaking of the 'firing pin stop' when you say 'insert' ???
Did you by chance install a 9mm firing pin(has smaller dia. at the forward end) ???
Correct firing pin spring and installed ????
Did you remove any metal at the radius(top)of the firing pin stop or on either side of the 'stop' ????
Is the firing pin spring pushed all the way down to the shoulder of the firing pin ????
Do you have the firing pin stop in upside down, sounds like it,,,,
Pix of my lab rat gun with firing pin stop installed upside down. Notice the 'pin' at the 12 o'clock position as you described,,,,

Bill,
Yes the insert is the firing pin stop. Although my stop looks different than yours, I rotated it 180 and it worked. I felt dumb but am now a bit more educated.
A package is headed your way with something for postage inside.
Thanks,

An old and especially true saying comes to mind when it comes to guns; The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. I have called on others more times than I care to admit, including a Walther P-38 that I took to "Hangfire" Bob in a bag and I have always come away a little better educated for the process. Now I can do a little for others. Your day will come to pass some of this on as well. 0 -
Bill,
I hope the extractor tension is good now. I'll need to shoot it to make sure. Then again, my original failure to feed the first round still could be a magazine issue.
