Winchester model 50
What do you all think of the model 50? I looked at one in a local shop, 20 gauge 28" modified, couldn't believe how light it was for an auto. Any pros or cons on this model? Anything I should check for before buying one?
Thanks

I have found the DOM but how do we find out if it is a trap model? it has a 30inch full choke barrel w/vent rib 0 -
Older short recoil actuated, made in the 50's. Yours might have a aluminum receiver? The 12 gauge I had years ago, wasn't that light.
Given it's age, and how long it has been out of production. I wouldn't buy it without test firing. If replacement parts are needed, might be hard to come by?0 -

added Chokes back then were determined with felt wads, one piece plastic wads pattern tighter. Put it on paper to figure out the actual pattern %.0 -
20 guage, much harder to find than 12s.. As the saying goes, good old guns and I have had a few 12s. They were heavy but shot very well. I would snatch a 20 if stock not cracked up. 0 -
One needs to be VERY cautious with those barrels, as, if I am not mistaken, they are very thin, and overwrapped. 0 -
That was the Model 59 that was wrapped. 0 -

Correct, 59's, pretty guns though and never had a problem with that either.0 -
I have the 12 ga. and I like it a lot, easy to take off the barrel and
chamber insert and clean. It can only hold 2 shells in the magazine, so
it was always a legal duck gun, and you cannot extend the magazine to
hold more shells.
The worst aspect of the gun is trying to remove the butt-stock. I had
to build a tool from a 3/4" pipe that I cut 4 notches to fit the
notched ring in the stock,
and remember the number of turns because it's spring
loaded and has to do with correct cycling of the action when fired.
It would be a rare day to remove the stock except I needed to refinish
it and recut the checkering.
I would like one in the 20 ga, but I don't do much hunting and have
2 other guns in 20 ga.
hope you get it, Thor0 -
Thanks for all the replies and yes Thor I did get the 20 gauge. It is as light or lighter than my model 12 that I grouse hunt with. There is a model 50 12gauge on GB with a cutts that has a skeet choke on the cutts. Anyone have or shot one of these with a cutts? Would it weigh about the same as the 20 gauge I have? Also what would the effective range be with the cutts skeet choke? 0 -
Too bad ole Bobskl isn't around, He could tell you anything you would want to know. He was the model 50 MAN.
Actually the 50 is a very good shotgun and you will enjoy it0 -
