Depending on the revolver. If the chambers have internal shoulders, like the S & W's. They can be shot without the use of clips.

Each of fired brass cases, has to be removed separately though.

If the revolvers chambers don't have a internal shoulder, they can't be fired that way.

That's why I like my Smith's. I find it easier to just drop them in the cylinder and shoot instead of loading them in the moon clips and removing the brass from the clips when done.

My 625 works great w/o moon clips
No problems with the fired cases.

After reading your post I went out back and tried shooting my S&W model 22-4 (model 1917 copy) with out using moon clips. I was able to fire one round, after that the recoil caused the rest of the rounds to slide forward, far enough that the firing pin just left a small mark on the primer, failing to fire any rounds, after the first round fired.

I liked the 2 round clips better than the 3 round ones especially if you keep the pistol indexed so you could top it off every 2 shots if needed. Auto Rims were worth the effort if you buy new brass as opposed to shooting the was cheap ball stuff.

    Good price $200/M https://www.starlinebrass.com/brass-cases/45-Auto-Rim-Brass/

    Mine looked different than these.

The later Colt New Service (1917) had a cylinder that headspaced on the case mouth to shoot .45 ACP without the clips.
You didn't say ACP so the above may not be relative to your question.

Ruger builds a Super Black Hawk convertible that interchanges .45 acp and .45 Colt cylinders requiring no moon clips.

My S&W 25-2 requires no moon clips, but then it came from Locust Fork and she has only the best.

My Pietta 45 Colt SAA replica has a spare cylinder in 45 ACP. That one does have an internal lip for the case mouth to seat on. Shoots fine. [:)]

My Colt 1917 can be fired without moon clips, but the brass must be punched out from the front of the cylinder. I had always read that the S&W 1917s accepted .45 Colt ammo and therefore needed moon clips to fire .45 ACP. FYI, there are nylon clips which are a lot easier to use when it comes to removing the brass. There are also special tools for removing the brass from steel clips.
