Colt 1991 WPA West Point 45 Auto
Hello. Newbie to this board, but old otherwise. I bought a Colt 45 auto in 2000 for $450 new. It is a 1991WPA model, marked US Military Academy Class of 1998 on one side and Duty Will Not Wait on the other. Slide is bright blue and frame is matte. It came with Colt rubber grips and I installed ivory like grips with Colt emblem.I just do not see these listed anywhere, other than the commemorative models, which it is not. I am sure I got it at a good price, just wondering what it's worth might be. It has been fired 10 times. Thanks for any help.

Probably a graduation gift. Looks nice. 0 -
Previous poster is correct. Colt advertises them on this web site. They even have a picture of one.

Thank you. It was my understanding that these are given to graduating cadets and that some were released for sale ? 0 -
The one pictured on the provided link is a different version with rolled engraving. Thanks anyway 0 -
Also, if this gun was produced by the Colt custom shop I would not have been able to buy it new in the box, which is the standard Colt blue plastic. Someone would have had to order it for themselves then sold as used.maybe I can contact Colt directly. Thanks 0 -
New Colt guns are ordered from Colt by a Colt distributor. In the case of "special editions" such as this, the organization often takes "pre-orders" so they know how many to buy. It's likely that they have a Colt Custom Shop box end label, but, that doesn't matter, they still were sent by Colt to the distributor who ordered them.
For larger orders, Colt makes a few extra guns, just in case some are lost. They keep them at the factory for a while, then sell them to a distributor at a discount. That's why you can sometime buy a police department special order gun, brand new in the box.
If you read the fine print on the Colt website, you will see that they modify the service academy design for every class. Since few service academy graduates will sell such a gun, you just don't see them offered for sale very often. But, handled, fired, & without the box, it would probably sell for about the same as any other used 1991.

The amount of Gingerbread, on these West Point 1911's. Would be one of the factors, affecting their price. As Neal noted, every year would be different. Your's might be one of the early production ones, that had relatively modest embellishment. My WAG, Colt stepped up their game on the later years, to make them pop/more saleabil.0 -
Thank you. I bought it in 2000. I wish I would have asked the gun shop a little more about it at the time. 0 -
I called Colt and found out there were 152 of these made for the West Point Academy in 1998.Apparently there were some left over that made it to the gun shop where I bought it.I am just glad to find out what the history is. 0 -
The serial number shown appears to be a specialized series. The "USCC98" prefix would probably mean something like United States Colt Commemorative for 1998. As the M9 was long established by '98 the offering of the old war horse may have appealed to the more nostalgic members of the class.

Thanks...I just wonder what it's value might be even though I do not care to sell it 0
