Bullet Trap Questions ?????
I picked up this BULLET TRAP at a gun show and am looking for info on it. Here are some pictures:
http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/Redbear57/library/BULLET TRAP?sort=3&page=1
It was made was the DETROIT BULLET TRAP COMPANY and sold by a local sporting goods store that is no longer in business. The opening is 12" square. The side wall metal thickness measures 0.150" and the top piece metal measures 0.221" thick.
It appears that this bullet trap is old and is no longer made.
Any ideas as to what caliber bullets this can handle?
From the research I've seen so far, it looks like it can handle up to 357 mag loads or even 44 mag loads, but who knows for certain. 44 mag is a lot! Thoughts?
Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't trust it past 22LR. Well maybe 25ACP, 38 S&W etc.
It is not heavy enough to absorb the energy without tipping over.0 -
Detroit Bullet Trap became Caswell Detroit, became Caswell, became Meggitt Caswell, became Meggitt. http://meggitttrainingsystems.com/Law-Enforcement/Live-fire-training/Bullet-traps
I would email and ask them. You might be surprised at what some of those would handle. Be sure you have good ventilation AWAY from you in any place you shoot.0 -
Those traps were intended for shooting 22lr lead rounds. My dad used one to practice for Bullseye competition while shooting in our basement.
I would NOT shoot any jacketed ammo nor any 'ball' ammo into that trap.0 -
I have one like that. I picked mine up from a guy that had a couple of them that came out of a indoor gun range. I have shot 9mm in mine. 0 -
It looks more sturdy than mine which is rated only for.22 LR.
But I'd need a more solid answer than that before trusting it to handle more than .22.0 -
local gun club sold them off 20 + years ago and i bought one they are for 22 only !! 0 -
As usual, a wealth of knowledge... THANK YOU!
I contacted the replacement company and am awaiting an answer.0 -
Here is the info I received this a.m. from the replacement company:
Hello Barry..
From your description - I think you have an old Portable Master Bullet Trap.
These are not a Meggitt product - and I recall Detroit Armor discontinued making these in approx. 1990.
The spec was in the area of Handguns up to 2000 FPS - No A.P. Ammo - shooting from a safe distance with an adequate backdrop beyond.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS & ASSISTANCE! ....[:)]

Redbear57,
Just to narrow down the date of your trap, going by the "Zone Codes" (2-digits), in the addresses, I'd say that it was made BEFORE 1967. By then, the "Zone Improvemnet Plan" Codes (4-digits) were in full use. Have fun, and shoot some for me!
