A discussion on another venue has us wondering just what the 'p in oval' means on a winchester barrel. IN particular,lever guns.
Does it mean what i've been 'taught',that the barrel is approved for smokeless powder. ?

  It means the barrel was a mail order replacement barrel. They began proofing them like that may 31 1913.

  Bob nailed it... it indicates a non-factory installed replacement barrel.
