ITHACA 37 40th anniversary
I found a nice(98%)40th anniversary ducks unlimited ithaca 37 at my local pawn shop.
They came down from $899 to 450 quickly.
Although it looks great I am skeptical.
The engraving has gold inlay as does all the writing.
The only other one I have seen did not have gold engraving.
My concern is whether or not it came from the factory with the gold inlaying or did someone try to pretty it up.
I would appreciate any comments regarding this type of 37.

These kits have been around for years. Unless you can prove that the shotgun came from Ithaca, with gold filled engraving. Assume it was done by a previous owner.

I am backing away from this one unless someone out there can tell me for certain that some came new with the gold engraving.

EDIT:
A google search did show 2 with the gold.
Still,that doesn't mean they left the factory that way.

Either way, I think it's worth it. Wood should also be high grade.
Is it a std or Deluxe model with VR?
What's the DOM? Early ones require hand fitting of replacement barrels while later ones don't

It does have the VR.
I am not sure but I think the DOM is 1977 on these models.
It looks like they made an auction and a trade model with the auction being the better.
I don't know which it is.
I will be able to tell by the Serial#
Although I won't get hurt at $450 Id rather put the money towards something else if its been fooled with.
Maybe the auction grade has the gold inlays.

Most of the time, unless it is a limited run from the factory, for the factory, the "bling", is added by a second party doll up house. The DU, NRA, Whitetails Unlimited, NWTH, etc. guns are all representative of this. They are not worth anymore than their contemporary counterparts on the market, unless you have someone with a specific interest in that specific gun.
That said, you done well with your purchase.0 -
Photos would be a big help, as always.
If the receiver has a "rolled" engraving, then the gun does not have gold inlays. Inlays are hand imbedded in hand engraving by a skilled engraver. If it has bronze colored filling, or a gold color grease pencil was used, it has no value above a standard field grade gun.
It doesn't matter who did the work. It's not a bargain price.

I am not into commemorative guns.
If I were to go ahead with the deal it would be in hope of trading it at the other local pawn shop for something they have.
I deal with him often and don't want to misrepresent what I have.
EDIT...found pics of 2 more with gold inlays.
I feel comfortable that some came that way.
Wish I hadn't said to the seller that 450 seemed like a very fair price.
I believe he would have went down to 400 maybe even 350.

Personally I have been stuck with to much similar stuff, over the years. At $450, doesn't seem to me that your going to come out ahead. Since the advent of the net gun auctions, sleepers are history.
Unless you're able to trade it off, or sell it to a collector. I don't see you making any money on it.0 -
Making money on guns is hard unless you can buy them for 25 to 33 % of what they can sell for quickly. Big money items I was 100% sure of I might go 50 to 75%. 0 -
To me that's not a bad price for a DU. I know it's US$, but I just got a 16ga.37 made in '52, plain but nice and I laid out that much.....it's hard to get them in really nice shape because they are so nice to hunt with. 0 -
I have been watching for a clean 20ga.with VR.
Doubt this 12ga.DU will scratch that itch.
The seller put it up and gave me a couple weeks to decide.
deerhide...I don't know but a nice 16ga.from 52 may have more value than a 1977 DU.0
