Colt 1911 A1 US ARMY
I have a Colt 1911 A1 "US Property" which is marked on the right side of the slide "M 1911 A US ARMY" there is no "1". It is not worn off and the rest of the roll mark is very clear. The other side of the slide has all the proper patent dates and roll marks, as best as I can tell. All of the rest of the features on the frame are consistent with an A1. I was wondering if anyone has seen a slide missing the "1" Thanks for your help.

The "1" is on the frame but not on the slide. Could it be a replacement?0 -
I think Spyder nailed it.
Spare slides from Colt, Ithaca, RR, & US&S were marked M1911A1 U.S. ARMY on the right side beginning 8/15/38. I would think it's possible the 1 was broken off of the roll die. While uncommon, I doubt that it would add to the value of a mixed parts pistol.

something is not right can you show picture of the whole slide from very front to very rear[?] the pony in front the address is early not on a 1911A1 this slide has either been refinished many times or re struct and then refinished the
edit The hammer would be easy to change along with the grip safety and Mainspring housing but does the frame have the 1911AI relief cut out for the trigger finger[?][?] this would tell us if frame was built as a 1911 or 1911 A1 frame What is the frame serial # and what is the font of the" NO "letters I think the slide has had BUBBA work done to it[:(] the military would not let something like that pass inspection YMMV0 -
Since the A is clearly there and the 1 is clearly missing, I would ASSUME it is a wartime production error and there are more like it.
MODEL OF 1911A1 U.S. ARMY was stamped on Colt field replacement slides manufactured in 1938 to Oct. 1943. Ref. U.S. PISTOLS & REVOLVERS 1909-1945 BY J.C. Harrison. It would take an expert highly knowledgeable of 1911's to verify a missing number like this occurred.0 -
I will post more pictures of the complete gun. If Bubba reworked this slide he's pretty good and I'd like to find him. Like navc130 said there must be more like this. Thanks for everyone's help and interest. As I used up my ten wishes it will be a new posting. 0
