Lyman 45 Part 2
Got it up and running. Really stiff unless I use the heat gun.
Thanks M1A762. I'll order from your recommended source.
Question: How important is it to remove ALL of the lube from the base of a bullet?

I wipe my bases as I remove the bullets from the sizer. Pistol rounds with small charges of 231 or Bullseye get wiped again before seating in cases. I usually store my cast sized bullets in coffee cans with a lid. 0 -
From my own experience of long ago, if I don't remove lube from the base, heat may melt the lube into a small charge of powder and deaden the charge. So to reinforce what was already said, wipe the bases clean before loading. 0 -
I don't get any lube on the bullet bases unless the bullet has a beveled base. I get zero lube on flat base bullets.
I think your problem is too much pressure combined with a lube that needs heat. Once you start using a softer lube that does not require as much pressure and heat you won't be getting lube on the bullet bases.
Don't hesitate to adjust the depth that the bullets descend into the size die. There is a sweet spot for every different bullet design that will put lube in the grooves and nowhere else.
Every now and then I take a heat gun to my sizer dies and clean them up. I like to get all of the old lube out and start with a clean sizing die and fresh lube in the reservoir. Works for me![:)]0 -
I don't worry about lube on bullet bottoms and never had any issues because of it. 0
