Ruger ar 15 magazine problem
Does anyone besides me have problems with jamming using metal surplus and also new magazines?
The surplus mags 30 round and DPMS mags cause the rifle to double feed fail to feed and bolt not locking after last round on ejection the bolt rides about half the follower then stops.
I used the M16 40 something years ago and after I left viet nam I never picked one up until just before this past Christmas my name was drawn in a raffle. times have changed and I would like to find and fix the problem.
the surplus mags have new followers and springs and have been parkerized.
Also will it hurt the rifle to shoot the steel cases made in Russia?
Thanks for any help

Steel cases can be hard on extractors, have a spare or two on hand.
Magazines often require tuning. Sometimes they can't be easily be made to work in one firearm but may work fine in a different one.0 -
Buy some MagPul magazines and be done.
As Charliemey said, steel can be rough on extractors. The other issue can be the lacquer they're coated with can gum up a tight chamber.0 -
buy the silver bear ammo from russia no laquer polished zinc 0 -
I had a lot of trouble with the Wolf, ( Russian steel case), ammo, in handguns when it first hit the market.
Went to the Golden Bear, Zinc plated stuff. As a previous poster noted, It worked great.
Recent Wolf ammo I've shot, has a plastic coating over the steel. That lets it function OK, in my guns.
I would wonder though? If rapid fire in a AR, would cause the plastic coating to melt? Fouling the chamber.0 -
Chuck the mags you have to the side. Go get a couple Lancer or Magpul mags and see how it runs with them. If it runs fine with the new mags then use the old mags as targets. 0 -
The AR is brand new? It may take a while to "break in". Two of the symptoms described may be related to rifle function vs. magazine problem.
Failure of the bolt to lock open might be due to the magazine follower not lifting the bolt lock or the bolt not fully cycling(not going far enough to the rear). The comment about " after last round on ejection the bolt rides about half the follower then stops" indicates that the bolt catch IS lifting but is catching the bolt carrier rather than further forward on the actual bolt head. "Fail to feed" can also be caused by incomplete bolt travel.
"Double feed" has several connotations and requires clarification. Are you getting a loaded round in the chamber and another jammed behind it in front of the bolt? Are you finding a fired case still in the ejection port with the bolt attempting to feed a loaded round? Or is there some other problem going on?
I will try to help sort this out but these issues are more difficult to resolve by keyboard. The "surplus" mags may have feed lip issues and "DPMS" mags may not be top shelf items. On the mag issue, I'd suggest trying to find a 20 round metal mag and load it with 5 rounds. for a test run. Even better would be borrowing a 20 rounder known to be functional. If you're only having the problem when using a full 30 round mag, that's obviously a mag issue--don't load them full.0
