You need to go to one of the suppressor specific forums.
I mainly use Gemtech and Silencerco but there are over a hundred mfgrs and thousands of models nowadays.

Figure .223 and .22LR can use the same can. I read folks saying to buy a .308 to do it all. Might be much for a pistol.

A 308 will not handle a 9mm. I do agree with one for 223 being able to handle 22LR.

The GemTech, and Silencerco are two big ones out there, but now even some firearm manufacturers are offering them like Sig Arms, and Ruger.

While a can rated for .223 will handle 22lr, be advised that most 22lr cans are designed to be taken apart for cleaning which is required when using greased lead bullets. There are a few centerfire rated cans that are built this way but most are "sealed" (welded together) to ensure they don't blow out under the pressure. I've heard that sealed cans may be cleaned in a sonic tank but don't know this for fact. In addition, the extra weight and length of a .308 rated can would be intolerable on a 22lr.
A .308 can will work on .223 but loses some effectiveness vs a dedicated .223 can.
A pistol(9mm) is a whole different critter as pistol cycling usually requires a "booster" or muzzle adapter other than simply threading in place.
Silencer Shop has some very good info.

Seems to me you need about 2 to 3 cans.
    1 in 30 cal for 308, 7.62x39, 223, and 22LR.
    1 in 45 cal for 45 acp, 40 sw, and 9mm
    1 in 22 for a dedicated 22lr can.

+1 for research, its your best investment.

A class 3 dealer friend let me try his Uzi's in 45 ACP and 9mm with cans. Shussssss tingle, tinkle, tinkle as brass hit the deck, awesome. I could also hear the bolt rattling around. Very quite over all with sub-sonic loads in the 9mm.

Don't expect "TV quiet" on a budget.
I'm pretty happy with .223 full power loads in the 22 lr rifle sound range(hearing safe) and 22lr with subsonic ammo quieter than a pellet rifle. Four inch 22 pistol is hearing safe down to "what was that?". The smaller end of the 22 lr cans may not do quite as well and may be more subject to "first round POP"(especially the lower cost units).
An affordable stable would be a 22lr and .308.
Personally, I'm not going to spend the $$ to have a quiet center fire pistol. Although i'm sure they would be fun, there's a financial limit that requires making a choice. Pistol cans require a new barrel, accelerator, special can, and of course the $200 stamp.

I have used Gemtech and Knight Armament Corp on H&K MP-5's in 9mm and 40 S&W and both are excellent units. As mentioned they can be pricey when you get into the better quality cans. I have a little .22 lr unit from Innovative Arms on a Ruger 10/22. Works just great with subsonic target loads. I also use it in a threaded S&W M&P Compact. It comes apart easily for cleaning and seals up well for service. One of the nice things about the Gemtechs and K.A.C. units they can be used wet or dry.
