They can be difficult to put back together. Follow the instructions to the letter, and understand what they are saying and it should work. I've had the same problem too.

Use this search term on Google. "Assembling Ruger 22/45". It will take you directly to U Tube. There are at least 3 videos on this subject. Don't feel bad everybody has had this problem, when first putting the Ruger .22's back together.

Took me two tries the first time.

As toad67 states: Read the manual and follow it to the letter.

If you can not get the pin to go in, the barrel may not be all the way back in battery. If you have the pin in, and when you try to close the main spring housing and the housing hits the bottom of the grip opening, then your not getting the pin past the rear of the recoil spring, or the hammer strut has moved on you. My suggestion after you get it back together, take it apart again a couple of times and reassemble, you can't really hurt them, there built like and old 57 Buick.

Well done. So did you put it together with good lube in the right places after you cleaned it meticulously inside and out?

I installed a new hammer and sear in my 22/45
and had one heck of a time installing the pin
to the upper. I finally found out the "plastic"
lower was slightly warped and I had to rack it/bend it for
the pin to slide in place .
This gun is on it's way out. I'm not gonna fight with
    it again
