I have a mauser rifle chambered for 7X57 Mauser. I would like to have it rechambered to 284 Winchester. Is this possible and/or adviseable? The 7X57 case is a little longer than the 284 case. 0 -

Start here and scroll down to the M100 Recall if appropriate http://www.leeroysramblings.com/Gun Articles/winchester_model_88_100_info.html
I suggest he take up reloading. 284 brass can be found, dies, powder, primers and bullets are around.
Here is 6.5-284 brass for a little over a buck a copy, bump it up to regular 284 just by FL sizing. http://www.sinclairintl.com/reloading-components/brass/rifle-brass/6-5mm-284-winchester-brass-100-box-sku749007358-37539-70591.aspx

I like the 6.5-06 - 256 Newton, 7mm-06 - 280 Rem and your 6.5-284 or the 284 itself is in the same velocity category just harder to get brass.0 -
It would probably cost more to rebarrel a M100 Winchester than to buy a good replacement. Completed auctions show M100's going for $400 to $800 depending on condition and DOM. Reloading for an autoloader like the M100 is sometimes complicated because of feeding issues. Were it mine, I'd keep the M100 and use the money I planned on using to rebarrel it to buy another rifle. 0 -
Not sure what model it is your talking about, but if it is a Model 100, in any kind of decent condition, he can most likely sell it and get two rifles. That rifle was made in 3 chamberings, and that was the rare one. The other two were the 243, and 308 Winchester's.
My suggestion, is that he actually look for something in 7mm-08, or 260 Remington. They will get within a couple hundred feet per second, performance wise.0 -
kumate,
As suggested, this is one of the rare rifles and attempting to re-barrel it is not a good idea. Kids looking for immediate gratification should sell the rifle and buy what they can afford especially if they don't reload. He can get some really decent money for this rifle and then with some direction from a shooter, buy a rifle which better suites his needs.
