This is a pretty interesting site as far as velocities go.

While you can get to a point of diminishing returns, in general longer is better.

When the .243 was new on the market, one writer chambered a custom gun for it. He said he didn't know what a factory length gun would do and he was not going to ruin his 31" barrel to find out.

This forum is most likely the best source for ANY of that information. There are several wildcatter/cartridge designers on here that will tell you the best barrel length per caliber cartridge case size. I'm talking about folks who do it for a living, and not a hobby.

Slower powders may affect barrel length over factory loads but Ballistics by the inch gives a good estimate.
In catalogs of old black powder rifles, companies like Sharps gave options of some pretty long barrels at extra cost.

Optimum - Ever have to go into thick brush after a critter?

For a shotgun after about 16" the powder is burnt.

I suggest you shoot over a flat patch of new fallen snow to see how much un-burnt gunpowder can be broadcast down range by the way over bore capacity cartridges.

The additional velocity from a longer barrel and a larger case is the tradeoff to handiness and barrel life.
