Winchester 70 pre 64 firing pin
Are the tips of the 22 hornet firing pins slightly narrower than the 243, 270?

Should be the same according to blueprint. Tip should measure .075" - .078" diameter.

Steve, I just measured it and it's .066". The reason I'm thinking Hornet is the small rifle primer. I took a 243 bolt apart and it fits perfectly. It's listed on Ebay auction 1119 7407 9979 0 -
I could not find that auction with the number you listed. I did check bolt bodies also, and they make no distiction in the blueprints between firing pin holes in any of the model 70 bolt bodies.
I do not think any manufacturer uses a different size pin for small vs large primers. I know for sure Remington does not. You start having problems with pierced primers when diameter is reduced.
By the way, I have an extra 22 Hornet bolt assy. Pulled it apart this evening and measured diameter. It measures right on .075".

While this may apply to Remington, Winchester, Ruger, etc. it hardly applies to the custom manufacturers of the better (best) actions. Many of the custom action makers supply a smaller diameter (0.068" to 0.062") specifically aimed at the small primer cartridges used for extreme accuracy in competitions. Seemingly these shooters manage to avoid the pierced primers that you warn about.
Dokey,
There is the possibility that the bolt body and firing pin have been modified in order to accommodate the small primers and a smaller firing pin diameter. There are some darn fine gunsmiths out there who are capable of this modification and leave it looking unaltered.
On the other hand, you might check with Bert to see if there may have been a special run of Hornet rifles with small firing pins.
