One of the Italian proof marks, is a coded date. The earlier ones from 1955? to 1975, are Roman Numerals. From 1975 on, they used the format of two capital letters, to represent the year.

This is a stainless 1862 Police with proof mark stampings mostly washed out from polishing.
Uberti has no record of making this piece.
I believe it a preproduction prototype dating from when Colt planned to "produce" a whole line of SS percussions.
It came off Uberti's Connecticut wall display.
After Colt sent me a letter stating they changed their minds about producing the SS line as planned, I bought the Uberti.
I suspect Uberti figured in on supplying finished or unfinished SS revolvers to Colt.

Seems the stainless Uberti cap and ball revolvers (non-1858 NMA) are in hot demand. There's a fella on another board looking for them:

quote:While I haven't seen or heard of any of these rare Ubertis lately; I know there are still a bunch of them out there somewhere. So............ Let's update this request for info.

I am seeking the location of, and any information available on a line of stainless steel percussion Colt revolvers made by Uberti and imported by Allen Firearms, Santa Fe, NM; Southwest Muzzleloaders Supply, Inc. Angleton, TX, Uberti USA, and possibly others in the early to mid '80s. Phil Spangenberger did an article about these stainless revolvers in the October 1983 issue of Guns and Ammo Magazine. According to the article, the models that were being imported were the 1851 Navy, 1860 Army, 1861 Navy, 1862 Pocket Navy, and 1862 Pocket police. Thanks to Dr. J.L. Davis of RPRCA, Claremore, OK, I have a 1984 price list for Uberti products that lists fourteen different models of Stainless Steel Colts produced by Uberti at that time. Subsequent price lists expanded the line to 16 models by adding 4 ? inch barreled Pocket Navy and Pocket Police. The complete model list, known so far, is:

1851 Navy, Oval Triggerguard Revolver, Cal. .36

1851 Navy "Sheriff's Model" Oval Triggerguard Revolver, Cal. .36 *
1851 Navy "Sheriff's Model" Squareback Triggerguard Revolver, Cal. .36

1861 Navy Civilian, Revolver, Cal. .36
1861 Navy Military, With Fluted Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36
1861 Navy Civilian, With Fluted Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36
    1862 Police, Semi-Fluted Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36, Barrel 4 ?"

    1862 Police, Semi-Fluted Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36, Barrel 6 ?"
1862 Pocket Navy, Engraved Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36, Barrel 4 ?"*
1862 Pocket Navy, Engraved Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36, Barrel 5 ?"*
1862 Pocket Navy, Engraved Cylinder, Revolver, Cal. .36, Barrel 6 ?"
(* - have identified location of examples of these models)
    (@ - have this model)

So far, total is now 25 known. I have seven of these revolvers and know of eighteen others in hands of other collectors or BP shooters. Anyone with information concerning Allen Firearms, Southwest Muzzleloaders Supply or any other Uberti Stainless Steel Colt style revolvers is requested to contact fingersmcgee@charter.net I am seeking information as to models, manufacture dates, serial numbers, barrel markings, barrel lengths, trigger guards, and any other characteristics as well as any catalog, brochure and original packaging information.

Of course, if anyone has any for sale, I would be interested in that also.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Post up a pic of your gun showing the markings.

I was waiting forever for a Colt 1862 Pocket Police. Colt stated earlier they were going to offer a line of SS models. After a later inquiry,
I received a letter from Colt stating they were not going to offer any other SS models than the 1860 Army and 1856 Navy.
Uberti said they have no record of producing an SS 1862 Police or even my sample.I'm going to reply to the sending Uberti Rep in Italy asking if there's a historian who knows more about the ColT-Uberti relationship.
Just because there's a priced model list doesn't ensure that guns were actually produced. Often catalogs list products to feel out market demand and production levels.
The Merwin Hulbert catalogs are such an example.

There's a question of SS or plated steel on the SS guns.
Hammers on my ss guns are surely plated carbon steel.
Cyl of the 1863 is nonmagnetic SS as are at least backstrap and triggerguard. I haven't checked the SS 1860 but hammer and trigger are obviously plated carbon steel.
Barrels and frame are magnetic SS.
I forget but there are austinetic and martinsitic stainless steels. One is magnetic and is stronger & heattreatable. So magnetic attraction isn't a proper test.
303 & 304 stainless grades are both nonmagnetic.
