I'd be looking at 90 grain or heavier bullets. What ever grouped the best.

I would personally be looking at the Barnes/VOR-TX line or the Federal line that loads the Barnes 80 grain TTSX bullet. Great accuracy, and on target performance way beyond ANY LEAD core bullet, of ANY weight. As a bonus, for those states that have lead free laws, they fit the bill.

    Best

    EDIT 1

For those naysayers about the Barnes TTSX 80 grain bullet, I can guarantee, that at 300 yards, it will break both shoulders, on a broadside deer, and you wont have cup/core separation, or bullet failure...now tell me about your cup and core bullets?

Standard 100 grain cup and core bullets are perfectly adequate for deer.

No need for anything supposedly "better". Instant death is instant death.

I've had good performance with the 100gr Nosler partition and poor performance with ballistic tips....

I loaded a bunch of Sierra 100gr GK (I think) the smaller kids shot them fine and they pack a wallop at ranges my new shooters are held to.

The recoil is nothing the gun is a Rossi single shot, but more than a few kids get jumpy about the tone of the shot. I have a special set of ear muffs that have speakers in them and they run some sort of quiet music while target shooting.

It is not a hazard because it is just one kid with me behind them, even then the music is just a buffer to keep them from getting flinchy over the sound. Seems to work well. The ones that have shot a deer dont even remember the gun going off. [:)] Just one was shot twice and that was because the young girls dad was a bit flaky, but that deer was double dead. [:D]

Since 1973, I've used a 243 off and on for deer/coyote. We've had some bad experiences with bullet performance as might be expected. The worst was Win PP factory loads and best were handloaded Speer Grand Slam and Nosler Solid Base. I haven't used Partitions, Barnes, or the more exotic bullets-it was easier to just use a bigger caliber.
The Nolser 95 BT does well enough if used properly. I've killed 1/2 dozen meat deer with that bullet w/o any problems(I've also killed quite a few with 70 grain HPBT Match bullets under specific circumstances-definitely NOT a recommendation).
I'd recommend no less than Rem CoreLokt, Federal blue box with Sierras, or Hornady SST. You don't need to spend $2 per shot but a few bucks per box gets you a lot more bullet.
