Win M94 reciever sight issue
I've got a m94 that I want to mount a lyman model 66a reciever sight on. The m94 is a 1976 vintage or thereabout. There's a problem. The reciever of the rifle is D&T'ed, the holes line up with the sight base as far as width spacing goes. However there's an angular "lip" along the top edge of the sight base that slightly over-hangs the top edge of the reciever. This dictates it's position. The reciever holes are lower than the sight base holes. I'm assuming the reciever holes are factory drilled, and a Lyman 66a is the sight listed for this rifle. This 94 is top eject. The sight I bought is a nice all steel model, not a newer aluminum one. I doubt the issue is with the rifle because I laid the sight base on a M94 Big Bore and saw the same issue. I noticed there's a possibility of repositioning the base either slightly forward or to the rear and drilling new holes. But it's a shooter grade rifle and I've already got $70 into the sight. I'm wondering is it worth it. I guess my main question is; does this commonly happen with a Win94 and Lyman 66a?

Personally,I would file off the interference
and mount the sight and paint the bare metal
to prevent rust.YMMV0 -
I recently read the instructions for mounting a Weaver Detachable Side Mount for a scope on the Model 94 Winchester (not a receiver sight). Quote: "The holes should be slightly (.004" or .005") below center so the screws, when tightened, will pull the shoulder down firmly against the receiver." I am not sure if this applies to a receiver sight also. If the difference of the holes is too great, I would just relieve the lip / shoulder until it fits. 0 -
yeah it's about 1/16" so it's too much for that. Good info to know though. I've thought about filing or grinding the excess for clearance but the slide release button is so close to what needs taken of I'd be afraid without hearing from someone who's done it. I'm thinking the base for Marlins is what I need to consider. It has the same lip along the top but it's not as thick. I don't konw if reciever sights are any more popular but the old steel ones are pricey. 0 -
I'm going to make a run to a gunsmith and let him look. I've found an older one who should be familiar with these things. 0 -
Just got back from the gunsmith and yep, that's what he said. Grind off the excess. I showed him the slide release button and how close it was to where he needs to grind. He just said he'll have to look at that closer. He wasn'nt a talker. 0
