Thoughts on this 629 please...
I'm trying to figure out how the 2 extra holes in front were used? Obviously the rearward one of the two has been drilled thru to allow carbon to come thru. The front of the original sight should be right where the back of the carbon ring is. But the holes look to close together to have had a base for a ring IMO. Thoughts?

In no way was there ever a hole to allow for carbon to come thru. There are two original holes for the rear sight, and the other two extra, drilled and tapped for a scope mount. 0 -
scope mount had to drill extra holes YOU DARN sure don't want any holes drill deep enough to go into the cylinder or barrel side 0 -
I agree that the front holes are wrong, but was trying to figure out how they were used. 0 -
The standard S&W rear sight has a long strip that fits in the groove on the top strap. It is retained by 2 screws, & the front screw goes into the hole with the carbon. The 2 larger holes were drilled to mount the scope.
The top strap is the weakest part of most revolvers. I've seen the top strap fail on less powerful calibers than .44 mag. Perry Shooter raises a good point: How deep did Bubba drill the extra holes on this gun?
I think that if I were to mount a scope on a .44 mag, I'd use a clamp mount if the gun didn't come with factory d&t holes.

Hi...For those that want to mount a scope on a 29 or a 629, S&W offered each with notches cut into the barrels that used Millett mounts, and the scope of your choice. BT 0
