1st sub-gun build
I have built an ak, ar, and 1911. I am looking at building a semi-auto sub gun, but which one? Sten, cz 24, or? Do I do 16" barrel so I can keep the stock or just do a pistol grip? What serinal numbers receivers are still being made? I know I can google but theres tons of stuff out there, so that is why I am asking the Experts!

If you build a semi auto version of a SMG and want to retain the butt stock, you'll need a 16" barrel. Otherwise it will be a Short Barreled Rifle and require registration and a $200 manufacturing tax. If you build it as a pistol, you can have any barrel length you wish, but you can only have a single pistol grip. Adding a forward pistol grip makes it an Any Other Weapon and once again, you'll need registration and a $200 manufacturing tax.
To avoid the risk of going through the same song and dance again, AOWs are $200 to build and $5 to transfer.0 -
I would build a UZI pistol. Their in 9mm, and the location of the mags are much more ergonomic. Located in the grip.

The Stens leave much to be desired. The way the long mags hang out the side. Years ago there use to be 9mm Sterling pistols. Imported and sold. With the long mags hanging out the side. They had the ergonomics of a blacksmiths anvil.0 -
I was eyeballing an uzi build also. Planning on keeping everything legal, so if there is a stock barrel would be 16" or just do away with the stock. I was figuring if I went with one of the older designs it might be easier to build. 0 -
If you're prone or in a trench, a horizontal mag is a good idea.
A British officer told me how they would keep firing if dropped.0
