    What is a 223 WYLDE?

Just a different chamber profile for optimal use with .223 or 5.56. Its not a caliber or cartridge

There has been a lot of hate and discontent, among folks on the various forums over the years. About using commercial .223 ammo, in military rifles chambered for the 5.56 x 45, and vise versa. Many were very vocal about it being unsafe, potentially causing injury or fatalities.

My personal feeling is that this was so much horse pucky. Put out by a bunch of gunshow commandos. Who didn't know their sphincters from a hole in the ground.

The Wylde chamber was engineered/designed to specifically. To be used interchangeably with both military and commercial ammo. To respond to this supposed problem.

The search engine on here is full of a wealth of information. Here is one of the most recent discussions on this topic

The 5.56 ammunition is loaded to a little higher pressure than the standard 223 Remington, although case dimensions are almost identical.

The 5.56 chambers allow for clearance of VLD projectiles up to 80 grains in weight, to be used in service rifle matches, and loaded singlely, not in a magazine. If you were to put that or a 77 grain smk round into a 223 chamber, the bullet would engage the lands, and upon firing cause a very dangerous pressure spike, contrary to what others might believe.

Long story short, the 223 Remington chambers that are to SAAMI spec, are short throated for use of up to 60 grain bullets, roughly speaking. The Nato, and Wylde, are longer throated, while the Wylde has a more gradual forcing cone than the NATO.

Just so you know, I have two AR's that are chambered in NATO, the other 4 in that caliber are Wylde chambers.
