Winchester 1904 question Attn Bert H.
Did Winchester ever make a 1904 38-40 with a 16" barrel?
A local fella has one that has a 16" barrel and I suspect that it has been cut to 16" the front sight is present and affixed like a factory sight. I would think that it was done properly by a Smith as it looks factory.
Any info would be appreciated.

Short barreled Winchesters, are known to collectors as trapper models.
Need quality close-up photos of the rifle. For any help in identification, I.E. if it's factory original.0 -
I will assume that you are asking about a Model 1892, manufactured in the year 1904?
If it is a "Rifle" with a 16-inch barrel, it is a "Short" Rifle. Carbines with a barrel shorter than 20-inches are referred to as a "Trappers".
The placement of the front sight dovetail cut, and the magazine tube retaining ring were always precise when Winchester manufactured a special order "Short" rifle. Additionally, the forend stock on a factory produced "Short" rifle is shorter than a standard length rifle forend. I will need to see clear pictures of the front half of the rifle to evaluate it.0 -
Yes, it is a model 1892. These are the only two pictures I currently have.

What you have is definitely an aftermarket cut down rifle. Originally, it had a 24-inch barrel and full length magazine tube. 0 -
Thanks Bert, any value to it? 0 -
It is worth the sum of its remaining useable parts, maybe $500. 0 -
Thank you Bert, that's about what it would take to buy it. Guess I'll pass on it. 0
