I am modifying an old shotgun and need to know the legal limit on how short the barrel can be. Use: Home Defence

    18" barrel and overall length of 26".

    As a practical matter, make it 18 1/2". A fraction of an inch too short can get you killed.

    And measure with a dowel dropped down the barrel on a closed bolt.

    I cut mine at 20", no matter how poorly they measure it's still long enough. I would consider some choke being added if the shotgun is ever going to be used to catch dinner.

    Replacing the cutting wheel with another roller on a pipe cutter allows for 'rolling' in some constriction on non-ribbed barrels; or using a brake hone to fashion a Tula style choke.

    Just buy a ShockWave or Tac-14 and never look back. Barrel length is at times irrelevant.
