FWIW Karl, if it's really a high end shotty then you might be better off to spend a few extra bucks for the service and have one of the shipping centers who pack items, pack it up and send it off USPS. That way since they packed it, it's their responsibility. Unfortunately, the problem I've found with a lot of those places is that they're a franchised outlet, and quite a few of them won't touch firearms. If you do it yourself, which isn't tough, make sure you pack it according to all of their requirements, and have it inspected before it goes out. It took some time, but USPS has been the only shipper that I ever got insurance $$ from when they broke a model 722 stock completely in half..

Meet the buyer 1/2 way at a Sporting Clays range. It's a one day adventure.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that the insurance limit on items mailed by first class, priority and certified is $5,000. An item with an insured value above $5,000 and below $50,000 must be sent by registered mail.

I would pack all the open spaces with pillow foam. Cheap insurance at about $4 a bag at Wal Mart. Pack it in tight the harder you pack it in the better it works.

So, I guess my advice to do USPS is out of line. Driving for two days must be cheaper.[|)]
