DOM Mannlicher Schoenauer 1903
I am wondering about the date of manufacture of a recently acquired Steyr Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1903, caliber 6.5x54 M-S carbine. Markings include: on left barrel, near receiver Austrian Coat of Arms (?, very small) and an apparent proof marking Nv; on left receiver side: Oesterr. Waffenfabr.-Ges. Steyr; on top of stippled non-glare receiver top: Mannlicher Schoenauer M1903; on right receiver just back of barrel: 140 * 13. and proof mark Nv; on right side of barrel 140 * 13., then 6.5 under that. My attempts to upload pictures have failed again. It has full length stock, 17.7" approx. barrel length, double set triggers, flip-up 100-300 meter rear open sights, all common for the 1903 carbine. Thanks in advance for knowledgeable help. Serial Number is 6697.

My WAG is that the "13", in the proof marks. Stand for 1913, as the year of proof. 0 -
My MS 1903 SN is yours + 4000 and it is marked Made in Austria on the magazine floor plate - no marking indicating DOM unless it is under the wood. If it is marked "Made in Austria" on the floor plate or anywhere else it at least predates the Auschluss of 1938. After that year until end of WWII, they would have been marked "Made in Germany" even though they were still made in Austria but lesser quality of manufacture. 0 -
This one is marked "Made in Austria" on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight. Intended for export if so marked? No markings at all on the floorplate. No "Stoeger" markings. 0 -
Found it! Some old info published by the Mannlicher Collector's Association says the proof markings are definitive, and would indicate this was the 140th rifle proofed in the year 1913. Rufe-snow, your WAG was bang on! 0
