older 870 question?
i picked up this older 870 today.
s/n 8570xxV
it has a 20" barrel which is parkarized (unlike the balance of the gun).
6 in the magazine +1 in the chamber. the barrel is improved cylinder, no tubes.
pics have been attached.
curious if remington ever built 870s configured like this??
also curious as to when this was manufactured? the barrel has no stampings other than shown in the pics.
i have not seen one just like it.
thanks!

nice looking gun
just my 2 cents
I would say it was put together aftermarket by some one
most factory guns come with th ebarrel and receiver as th esame finish
the barrel was added as its a matt ( express ) finish the receiver has the blue wingmaster finish along with wingmaster wood
same with the magazine extension I would guess added on some w=one just put together a home defense shotgun .
I have a few I have done similar except I keep the matt barrels ( express ) and the wingmaster blue parts together does not effect shooting I just like the looks better
as for dates I think remington has a web site with date codes for the gun0 -
thanks Ditch-Runner.

Since there are no date codes on the barrel. As the previous poster noted, probably put together for personal protection/home defense.
Call Remington customer service, with SN,(They have a large web-site, that lists all their corporate numbers). Least you could get the DOM, of the receiver.0 -
Bubba built "tacticool" riot gun. If it chambers and shoots, nothing really wrong with it just not a factory assembled gun.
I'd suggest using caution in respect to loading to the point that the shell's rim is still within the original magazine tube. A customer brought me one that would catch the rim at the joint between the original and the extension nearly every time.0 -
Be sure that you fire it within your return period. Remington has changed the dimensions of some 870 & 1100 parts within the last few years, & some parts are no longer interchangeable.

thanks gents. it cycles great. i think i will keep it for home defense. or, perhaps give it to one of my kids for their home(s).
i will shoot it today with bird shot and verify all is working. it sure pulls up nice. i have ape arms so a nice pull is a good thing!
i have an 870 express i used to turkey hunt with, this gun is much smoother. funny, the action looks so lightly used I would suggest less than a box of shells have been sent down the tube.[:D]0 -
You got a good library, too! 0 -
Looks like my 870 wingmaster. I bought it used at a pawn shop with rifled barrel with rifle sights on it. Sold the barrel for nearly what I paid for the whole gun. I had a cut off Parkerized/Matt express barrel that went on to make a nice home defense gun. Looks ugly but still shoots. 0 -
Looks pretty much like a police model squad shotgun. Short "parkerized" barrel and magazine tube extention. Like others said, put together with available parts since finishes don't match. Nice thing about 870's. Put them together in pretty much any format you like. 0 -
thanks for the further feedback.
mrs102,
i had a friend suggest it may have been a police squad gun also. it sure is smooth!
i called remington, it was manufactured in 1964 according to customer service.
