Sort of sounds like the magazine is damaged - any odd looking dents?
The rifle is old when was it last cleaned and lubed - old oil can turn to shellac and make the release hard to use.

Triple K sells modern made, (5 round) replacement mags. Kind of on the spendy side though, IMHO.

They have cleaned up their act, since they quit making mags in Mexico. Never had any problem, with their U.S. made mags. If they don't work, they will send you a replacement. See link below.

Charlie, there is nothing wrong with the gun it is the magazine that will only hold three rounds.

Most likely needs to be taken apart and cleaned. Must have some debris in the bottom under the follower.

I thought maybe the gun could have come from a state that only allows so many rounds in a gun. According to my information the model 43 should have a 5 round clip. I will check it out and see if something is in the bottom of the clip but I can not see any damage.

May just be the design of the mag. I have an old KoO Hornet and the mags only hold 3 rounds. 5 is common for .22 long rifle, but I haven't seen any in-line hornet mags that hold 5, unless they extend below the stock profile. (A look I've never gotten use to.)
IIRC, my Sako L46 was also a 3 rounder. No idea how many rounds my old Win. 54 would have held before someone tried to convert it to .222 Rem. Only had that for a short time as upon ejecting the first round all the rest would fly out of the mag well and onto the ground.

    Dodge69,
Just checked my 1957 Shooters Bible.
Model 43 was offered (at least in that year) in Hornet and .218 Bee,
both 3 ROUND CAPACITY MAGS. It is what it is! ;-)

Your information is not correct. The Model 43 magazine (not "clip") should only hold 3-rounds in 22 Hornet.
