Ithaca Model 37 Barrel Thread Tolerance ?
I have three different barrels for my Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight.
I noticed that two of the barrels seem to have a looser fit in the threads. The "original" barrel has a snug fit when rotated 1/4 turn to install it, the others have some wobble to them until the end cap is snugged up tight. They all seem to shoot fine.
Measuring the OD across the unthreaded portion (call that "A") and the threaded portion (call that "B") I get the following.
Original Barrel (full) A= 1.035, B= 1.123
Ithaca Deerslayer Smoothbore A=1.050, B= 1.115
Ithaca Defender 20" A= 1.045, B= 1.114
Before you say it, I will have a GunSmith look at it (or perhaps Ithaca)before I shoot it again.
That said though if you have a Model 37 (Featherlight or otherwise) how snug is your barrel fit ?
P.S. My serial number is 91X,XXX (so post 855,000)

Just a follow up.
I spoke with the good folks at Ithaca in Ohio, and since I purchased the barrel directly from them, they will fit the barrel and check headspace at no charge other than shipping.
Pretty good service for a 50+ year old shotgun.
Apparently some of the Model 37's even after 855,000 have some matched machining of barrels so the "fully interchangeable" is not a completely safe bet.0 -
Glad it got worked out.....ithaca is a really good company as far as I'm concerned. 0 -
measuring the OD is not a very precise method. one should use the correct thread wires to get a truly accurate measurement. the wires contact the sides of the V. the OD-top of the V is usually sanded to deburr by the machinist, plus the fact the top of the thread has no bearing on it. the sides is what you want the correct fit with. 0 -
Got my ITHACA Model 37 (Defender 20" barrel and 8 round capacity)back from ITHACA.
Very happy with it. They detailed it very nicely and sent it back in a form fit box. Headspace checked and all is good to go. No charge. Thank you Zak.
What a great company !0
