I have a Remington 870 wingmaster with a slug barrel. Can I put a regular barrel on it? Can it be a 3" barrel?
Thanks in advance for your help!

The chamber is in the barrel. If you use a 3" chambered barrel; yes.

This topic has been around before, but not in a couple of years that I can remember. As I recall, actions designed for the 2 3/4" case do not usually have the throw to eject the longer cases. Especially with older model 870 rems. If you haven't done a search you might try it, the answers were very good. That's why I remember what I do of them.

IIRC, The 870's have a short barrel tang. That said, the ejector is mounted to the inside the left side of the receiver... It's location ( fore and aft) is set up for the length of the shell to be used..

Gunnut,That is what I was thinking, barrel is the factor.

If you have a 2 3/4" action, you can put a 3" barrel on it, but you may only be able to shoot 2 3/4" shells in it, because the fired shell may have trouble ejecting from the action.

No...the receiver AND the barrel are both factors. Some of the early receivers will not take a 3" barrel. Both the receiver has to be 3" capable, and the barrel will be marked 2 3/4 &v 3".

OK, I think I got it. If receiver will eject 3" shells, it is OK. Not an issue with receiver strength. After all, the pressure is inside the barrel.

The later magnum receivers have a number that ends in M. I'm not sure about the older ones. If it ends in M it will handle the 3" shells as long as it has the 3" chambered barrel.

The bolt and locking lugs in the receiver is what holds the pressure in the barrel. But the strength is not really an issue here, as long as there are no barrel obstruction. It is just the ability to function. Do not ever put a 3" shell in a 2 3/4" barrel, as that can create that obstruction.
