Winchester 1907 351 Semi Auto - Magazines
Made a new fore stock (forend?) for my Winchester 07, installed a new buffer spacer, and went to the range a couple of days ago. The new fore stock was supplied partially "machined" and took a solid day of careful woodworking for me to get the fit right, but it seems nice and solid. The old one has about 5 lengthwise cracks in it that I have repaired a few times, so it is tucked away for now.
I am shooting original Winchester Ammo, as I have about 10 of the 50 round boxes of ammo in great condition, also going to try out one of the brands that is now being produced, and order some bullets to have on hand.
I really like this rifle. It shoots a bit high, but easy to compensate for that. I am pretty surprised at the impact energy it has from that 180 gr round. Also a bit more recoil than I expected though not as much as my 30/30. At any rate a lot of fun to shoot.
The two original 5 round mags shoot flawlessly, but I can't get the aftermarket 5 round or 10 round magazines to feed properly at all, whether it is the last 2 rounds or first two rounds they jam frequently. Springs don't seem strong enough but cartridge fit is also not perfect. I even tried some mods as recommended by logcabinlooms, but still had lousy results. Going to toss them, and stick with original Winchester mags from now on. Hate to waste that money, but of course can't return now that I modified them.

Cool to be shooting an old timer. Is your ammo marked non mercuric non corrosive?
Factory ought to be expensive to shoot, I'd consider reloading for it.
Tuning magazines is a black art. Tons of variables like the retaining notch location, the lips, follower shape, spring tension ....0 -

The weak springs are the most likely problem. Numrich sells originals and they are much stronger than those found in the aftermarket. I've switched out the aftermarket springs with the Numrich & had no issues.
Finding ammo or brass for the 351 can be a challenge, although between Selway, Buffalo, Grafs and Starline I've managed to build up about 500 rounds of 180 and 170 RN. Serviceable ammo can be made from 300 Blackout brass too. Extractor holds the case in place and that hammer hits like a brick anyway.0 -

Yes, the Winchester Ammo boxes all say "Non-Corrosive"
I am pretty much done with the aftermarket magazines. I now have 3 of the original 5 round, one of the 10 round on the way, and I am keeping my eye out for a couple more.0 -

I guess I am good for now, as the most recent decent 10 round mags seem to go for close to $200 which seems a bit high to me.
I tried the heavier spring with a aftermarket mag and still no good. I literally threw away the aftermarket mags as I did not want to stick anyone with such a bad product. The OEM 10 round I got works great.0
