U.S. REMINGTON 03-A3 Serial #4115985 / 458 WIN MAG
Was wanting an any information I could get from the group on a rifle I have. The barrel is stamped " .458 WIN MAG." on the barrel. The chamber/slide is stamped "U.S. REMINTON MODEL 03-A3". The serial # is stamped 4115935. I believe that indicates a 1942 US military issued. In .308 I believe they were used a Sniper rifles, but this is a .458 WIN MAG and have had a few friends at our local gun range put six rounds through it. It came with three full boxes (20 rounds/box) of .450 grain ammo. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm also considering having it appraised. Happy to post pics and vids of the gun and being shot, but not sure how to do it on this forum.

It has been rebarreled. Depending on the quality and quantity of gunsmith work done to it, value might be from 200.00-300.00. 0 -
Not a lot of call for 458's. O3-A3 are an ok action. Rail work is usually required to get the big round to feed from the magazine flawlessly. Rifling type and twist rate can be important and might add to the value.
30-06 was the WWII sniper round.

.308 was not in production until 1952. Not a WWII round. 0 -

The Remington 03-A3's, all were chambered for the 30-06 cartridge, not the .308. The .308/7.62 X 51 cartridge wasn't brought out, until the 1950's. Years after the 03-A3 ceased production.
I agree with the previous poster. The 03-A3 has been rebarreled with a .458 Winchester barrel. Unfortunately this ruined it's value, as a military collectible.

Thanks guys for the info. And I did mean 30-06, my bad on that one. The end of the barrel is also ported. I'll post some pics tonight. It just fires and sounds like a cannon. 0 -
A few pics of the rifle I started this topic about. Any help via this site or via email, would be much help to a new member. Thanks.

EDIT #1,
Completely Sportized, in the one photo that is visible.0 -
The work required to make that cartridge function in that action - and to modify the magazine is pretty detailed - involved - and difficult...
Personally (like most post war custom guns chambered for this round) I would have chosen the pattern 1917 Enfield or the siamese Mauser actions as platforms for this rebarreling - conversion)
There are many who would argue or debate that the 03 action is the weakest of these 3 options and might not hold up as well as the others...
I would actually hesitate to fire this particular gun or to fire similar conversions - that's just my personal opinion based on anecdotal observations and a gut feeling - it's not designed as an attack or insult or a disparaging remark - more of a word of caution...
Perhaps having an experienced gunsmith the inspect the gun and offering an opinion on it would be wise.
I wish you well.
