Model 70 pre-64 value.
Hey there. I'm looking at a pre 64 model 70. It's a rare, 257 roberts target model. Can't tell you the serial no or the year of manufacture, but the stock has been refinished and the metal has been cerakoted. The guy's asking 2100. Is that a fair price, or do you think that's too high or too low. Thank you
Thanks Bert H. I didn't figure it was rare in 257, but I was going by the description given by seller. It's listed here on GunBroker, btw.

First, the 257 Roberts is not "rare" in a pre-64 Winchester Model 70.
Second, it is not worth anywhere near that much in the condition you mention.0 -
This one is not a 257 but is a 270 - pre-64 - for about 1/2 that amount.
NO - I am not the seller. Best Regards - AQH

I guess this 257 caught my eye because it said "rare" and target/varmint, so I was thinking it was a heavy barreled target version, but after looking at it again, I don't think so, but I don't know alot about all the different pre-64's. 0 -
It pays to ask before you spend your money. I think PO Ackley said the 257 Roberts AI was one of the most efficient cartridges in his opinion.
added I doubt someone had an extra $300 above his asking price burning a hole in their pocket. Seems to me if you stretch the truth in the description, you are likely to stretch the truth about the sale.
a2 6.5x06 will be fun. Save the 30 cal for when the 6.5 is shot out.0 -
go with the above info, not a good deal. mr myopic. 0 -
A true Target M70 .257 is pretty uncommon. Shotgun guru Don Zutz had one.
Found it. http://www.GunBroker.com/item/637022141
This one looks like a Varmint model, heavy barrel in sporter stock. Probably more of those around along with the Swifts.
Refinishing the stock and painting the metal pretty much destroyed its scarcity premium. $2100 is just silly.0 -
The seller and I emailed back and forth a few times this morning. I told him I had asked the opinion of some experts, and his response was "well good luck with your so called internet experts" and then shortly after emailed me back and said everything my experts, (meaning you people here), was a mute point because he just sold the rifle and scope to a private collector for 2400. I'm happy for him.
Toad67, I was thinking the same thing.0 -

BS, just trying to save his azz from looking bad...0 -
trying to make you feel bad for not taking the bait, hook, line and sniker. no deal there. mr myopic. 0 -
A private sucker, is what he meant, not a private collector.
The rifle in question has been reduced to a $500.00-700.00 shooter, with no collectable value. As for building a custom Pre-64, the new actions are closer tolerances, and better suited. I have several of the Classic Pre-64 style rifles, and have more than once considered blue printing one into a custom extreme accurate shooter...1/2 MOA or better.0 -
Well, I think I'm gonna go with my original plan. I bought a Howa 1500 in 30-06 today. I'm going to take it to the gunsmithing school in Grinnell, Iowa and have them put a lilja barrel in 6.5-06 on it, replace the trigger, and then pillar bed and glass bed it. I could do the trigger and bedding myself, but thought I'd let a student do it for education. 0 -

Charliemeyer, the other $300 was for the scope on the rifle, which was a fixed 12x leupold with target turrets. Actually, it was a nice looking outfit, to be honest. I'm not very smart when it comes to pre-64 winchesters, but I'm smart enough to ask people who are, which is I posted the question. I would've like to had the rifle, but after hearing the expert opinions here, I wasn't about to pay his asking price.0
