scope
I am looking for a good..not great scopr for a Winchester Model 70 30-06. The P.O.S on it now has such a narrow field of view. I would like one that allows for more of a full field view. Any suggestions?

Depends on what your budget is, and what you wish to do. While I like the above mentioned brands, along with the Nikon Monarch series for starters, a Vortex Viper PST, is a cut above, with extremely good optics, and tracking/adjustment system, that is repeatable every time. I have kind of gone to it as my workhorse for my hunting rifles. 0 -
You have a classic rifle over 1/2 a century old. Match it with period correct scope.
actually I would buy two. leupold 3x9 gold ring duplex reticle. and leupold 2x7 german
post reticle. The mount, leupold bar which will allow quick interchange with either
scope fitted with leupold split rings.0 -

recently bought sonaernice model 70 pre 64 in 308, plan to use as my personal rifle for deer and hogs, hogs out to 300 yds. any reccomendations on brand of scope and rings ?
I have had a similar rifle (30-06)for similar use, for a dozen years now. I put a Leupold Gold ring on it when I got it and have no reason to look further. I'm sure there are several equivilent choices, but I sure like mine. Did the same with a featherweight .243 as well. Can't bring myself to do otherwise.0 -

Unfortunately, budgets get the nod when it comes to expensive glass for firearms. Most panic and run to the very affordable rather than the higher quality which would benefit you more. But I like the suggestion of a Vortex scope, not the cheepy lines but the top tier two lines.

If you intend to have a historically correct rifle then this is a viable option. But, if you want quality over period correct, skip these and move on to the better glass nowadays. Leupold has been left by the roadside while raising prices to unjustified levels.
Vortex just had a clearance on the 4-16x50 Viper PST for $399.00 each. Unfortunately these are all gone now. But shop the sales where you might stumble onto a deal.

Bingo! We have a winner!
VXIII 2.5-8 to be exact.0 -
My deer hunting rifle is a 1956 vintage Winchester Model 70 Featherweight chambered in 30-06. The scope I chose to use many years ago was a Leupold Vari-XIII 2.5-8 power with a Duplex Reticle. Works great and looks great! 0 -

Shop for a used one. You can save up to 50% that way.
You can't hit what you can't see. Make sure the rifle shoulders well for you if you get a fixed hi power - searching for the target can be an issue. 140 to 165 grain handloaded boattails would be my choice.0
