Square butt gun takes square butt grips. Only.
Hogue has wood, don't see rubber or plastic.

You will need to do work to make a round grip fit a square frame. I think it could be done in wood easily - rubber perhaps not so easily as it tears.

Ok this is most likely a stupid question but I am looking for after market grips for a Smith model 36 J frame in a Hogue grip. I checked a couple sites and all that is offered are the round butt style of grips.

My question (which I think I know) is this...can the after market grips interchange or not? As in the round fit the square or vise versa?

I have a square butt(pistol- lol) and need grips for it. thanks all for your time.

Smith used to and maybe still does make wood grips, smooth with square butt that has an enclosed backstrap. I have a pair and use them once in a while, you can't tell the gun is FB. I molded a removable epoxy insert between the gun's backstrap and the inside wall of the grip to ensure the gun stayed put during recoil. Probably not needed, the pin should hold it fine.

The model 36 is a round butt "J" frame model. So that is the reason that Hogue only offers round butt rubber grips to fit your revolver. As for your question, yes, there are after market square butt grips that will fit your round butt, but they will definitely be larger and feel different than your rb grips. These type of grips are called SB to RB conversion grips, or something very similar. I have only seen wood grips that are in this pattern, and never any rubber ones since there needs to be some areas that need to be filled in to take up the extra space from the missing grip frame. Probably because wood (usually laminated) is the only material that will stand up to the recoil w/o flexing like rubber would. Here are 3 that are currently on GB:

As for needing the square butt grips, I'm not sure how that relates to this thread...[:0][;)]

I know of one custom stock maker who makes round to square conversion grips. They are not really cheap. Drop me an e-mail.

You will need to buy square butt grips for your gun.
The model 36 was offered in both square and round butt configurations.

Hi....The 36s came in both square and round butt. You just have to be patient, look on ebarf, GB, and other sites, and you will come across stocks that suit your tastes, both wood and rubber. BT

To repeat the answer already given, no, you can't put round butt grips on a square butt gun.

On the other hand, J frame square butt grips are still readily available. Go "Google" these, and you'll find not less than a dozen different makes in all different styles and materials, etc.

This will start you off, but there are MANY others, and you should have no trouble locating a set.
