Did Winchester make the Featherweight in the 1970?
I remember being in the basement of Sears in Dallas, Texas in 1976, and seeing a bin full of Winchester Model 70's with the Schnabel forearm tip. I loved the looks of these rifles, but didn't have the finances to purchase one (I was only 14 years old).
Recently I found a 1981 Featherweight Model 70 in .270, and am trying to find out what I can about it. My 1982 Gun Digest lists the Featherweight, but it's not in the 1976 or 1979 editions of Gun Digest.
Is my memory faulty, or were those Model 70's I saw in 1976 really Featherweights?

Roger Rule's book indicates that the new model featherweight was introduced in 1981.
Edit: Also by Rule's book: The featherweight was introduced during the last year of Olin Corp. control.0 -
I remember those rifles also loved the look But I think you have some of the details Wrong I believe they were made BY USRA after Winchester stopped making rifles. the first one's did still have Winchester on the Rifle's recoil pad but your date is not correct. 0 -
According the information I found, Winchester (Olin Corp) made the Featherweight in 1981, and Winchester (USRA) continued making them when they took control in mid 1982. I may not be correctly remembering the rifles I saw at Sears in 1976.
Mine has the Red Butt pad with "Winchester Repeating Arms" on it. I believe it to having been made while Winchester was still owned by the Olin Corp.
Thanks for the replies.0
