Best gun safe for around 500 bucks.
Ok folks..looking to potentially buy a gun safe....im looking to try and keep it around 500 bucks or less (yes I know i should always get bigger and better but I do have a budget I have to stick to).
I have less than 10 guns I'm looking to store in it. I'd like fire protection of some kind. Access time is no concern as I do have a quick access pistol safe. A shelf of a sort would be a plus.
I have used Google, but real life experience with the safe is preferred.

I bought a Sentry 14 gun safe with the keypad several years ago that I really like.
It has the heavy door with large locking bolts and the number touch pad with key backup entry in case batteries die. Batteries have lasted about 5 years so far. I am very happy with it especially for the price. I paid $399 for it0 -
At what price point does a locker become a "safe"? I'm thinking at $500 it's an expensive locker. 0 -
I have 2 Winchester's. All Tractor Supplies sell them. I am satisfied with them Tom 0 -
I am with tccox. Tractor Supply has the very best deals, and while not $500.00 ceiling you are seeking, for $700.00, you can get a very nice Winchester labeled safe, that has 45minute/1200 degree F, fire protection, a shelf as you request, and door pockets for handguns. This safe has double lugs, meaning on BOTH sides of the door, and a digital keypad lock. It is by far more than a locker.

Are they rifle or pistols? That could make a difference. 0 -

Good safes are not 500 bucks you are pissin up a notted rope0 -
Well to clarify...i suppose the biggest thing I would like is the fire protection... I've only a few items to be kept in it....i doubt they make a safe too small for the modest number of items I have. A shelf is a plus, but not a requirement. 0 -
I was in same boat, wanted some level of fire protection but not break the bank. This is not the very best quality but I have been satisfied with it. Found mine at a local sporting goods store for $450.

I think you are wasting your money if you want fire protection, the fire protection these safes warrant are like 5-15 minutes normally. My cousin had a "fireproof" safe. after his house fire, which the fire dept. got out in about an hour. His guns were still in the safe but the heat had actually warped the barrells, they had "wilted" just bent over. For your money it will make you feel safer than your guns will actually be.0 -
kidthatsirish,
First of, in general, there is agreement as to the veracity of the claims made by the safe manufacturers. Like good liberals, they find it easier to sell a product when they distort the information about 'fireproof' or 'fire-resistant'. In most cases they are simply lying because there are no codes specifically written and enforced for gun safes. So, what this really means is that we as the consumers are responsible for understanding the information in their description and making the best decision possible without proper disclosure by those manufacturers.
Here is some fast, easy to read information:

Sometimes it can pay to think outside the box a little just to examine what else may be possible. Here is an example:

We all purchased:

These are 43"x18"x65" which is plenty big enough for all of us as individuals. I bought one for inside the house because it fit in a closet perfectly.
We used concrete board in layers for the outside.
You can certainly make the Wal-Mart safe work. You can also locate a used upright freezer which has lost it's compressor and get it for cheap. Add concrete board in layers to the outside being sure to cover the rubber gasket material. A weekend of design and execution will get you a fair size 'safe' which is somewhat fire-resistant.
