German Kar 98 from WW1 era?
Local guy has what he says is a WW 1 era Kar 98 short rifle. Has a straight bolt. front sight looks like the Polish 98's and has a rod under the front of the barrel I assume is a bayonet attachment Side of the receiver says "K 98". Wood hand guard goes all the way back to the receiver ring and rear sight is not like the WW 1 Ger 98's, more like the later guns. Any info would be appreciated.

It's not what he claims.
Kar 98's had a turned down bolt, no cleaning rod, and the receiver was marked Kar 98 (It looks like Kax 98)
There's other stuff but this is the most obvious.0 -
Here's a right Kar 98. Most (99%) come from Erfurt.

GOOGLE, "Model AZ carbine". The "rod under the front of the barrel". Is one of the distinctive features of the AZ, it is used for stacking rifles. As skyking notes, the bolt isn't correct, among other things. If it is in fact, a 98AZ? 0 -
A Polish K98 looks similar to the German Kar98, and it will indeed say K98 on the receiver side.
It will have a small receiver ring, and should be marked with Radom or PFK Warzawa, and the date of manufacture. If not, then it was scrubbed for the Spanish Civilwar.0
