As far as Smith is concerned, anything is possible. But in the mid 1950's, prior to the change to model numbers. It would have been the 4", Combat Masterpiece, (pre Model 18).
5" wasn't a common barrel length, used by Smith. On the commercial guns. (They made something like 1/2 million, 5", for the limeys during W W II). Only one I'm familiar with,is the Model 27. Even than, don't know if a 5" barrel. Was optional on the early pre model 27's?0 -
The 2 piece blue box, with metal reinforced corners. Wasn't used by Smith. Until the Model number guns were, made circa 1957.
Serial number "K 44027" dates to 1948. When Smith was still selling their guns, in the gold embossed boxes. K 22 Masterpiece, K44027, wouldn't have come from Smith in a blue box.0 -

Dates to 1955, still kind of early, for a pre 17/18? masterpiece.0 -
Sorry, misunderstood your original post.
IMHO it won't fit because the grips aren't original. Believe back in the 50's, the original grips. Would have been the slightly smaller, diamond type with darker wood.
Take off the grips. On a lot of the old Smiths. The serial number of the revolver, will be on the underside of the right grip.0 -

Anything is possible with Smith. Early Model 35's,(pre Model 35), are very uncommon S & W's though.
Another thought I had, was regarding the hammer. Could it be possible that it was sold with a standard hammer. And latter when a target hammer was fitted. It caused the problem with the fit of the revolver. In the original box.0
