Has anyone every made a good safety for a Jap rifle ? That big button one is a pain to use. 0 -
Sorry to ask put WHY spend time & money for that purpose[?] 0 -
short answer...no, with enough time and $$$ it probably could be done but then you would have to design a new safety or find an old timney trigger assy w/side safety. lots more $$$ than it would be worth. 0 -
Not too difficult to do, if I remember a 1950's article in the American Rifleman. Directions are also in some older gunsmithing books. I don't remember the safety being an issue, but I could be wrong. I hunted for many years with a sporterized 7.7mm Jap rifle. When slung on the left shoulder, muzzle up, the bolt handle would hit me in the small of my back and spring open, dumping the cartridge on the ground. Solution, carry it muzzle down.
Yes, my Jap 99 was an unaltered cock-on-closing. I never felt any need to change it.0 -

7.7 (aka t99) cocked on opening though.
I think you might do better to just get an Enfield.
Edit....i type corrected. Not sure what I was thinking, but after the below post I went and got mine out of the safe....sure enough cocks on closing....sorry for any confusion.0 -
