winchester model 1895 magazine issues
a friend of mine has a model 95 and is having some feed problems. it's 30-40 caliber, appears to chamber and eject properly, but it's obvious it's a re-barrel. it appears there is a clearance problem with the rounds in the magazine. the heads of the shells drag on the walls of the magazine.
i'll admit I don't know much about these guns and was wondering if there is a difference in the magazine size depending on the round it was built for. judging from the fit of the magazine when installed in the gun, I don't see how there could or would be much difference. considering how close the tolerance is between the lever action and the magazine, it looks to me as if it would be a one size fits all.
any expert observations or knowledge would be helpful.
trying to gain clearance for the rounds to function in the magazine and not having any luck.
thanks.[?]

Have the cartridges been measured to make sure their OAL is correct? 0 -
Perhaps the magazine is tight or for like an -06 if they are different. The new shells/brass might have a larger rim than the rifle was design way back when.
Someday I'd like to build a takedown 95 in 30-40 Ackley improved.
Look at the gun parts page and check the part #'s on the magazine stuff to see if there are different parts.0 -
Never had a hands-on, with any caliber of Model 95. They were chambered, for both rimmed and rimless cartridges though. There might be small internal dimensional difference. Between a magazine made for 30-06, and a 30-40 magazine. Just a thought.
If it has been rebarreled, no telling what else that has been done. Or if it was originally chambered for a rimless cartridge.0 -
thanks for the replies. all good points. keep them coming. 0 -
Check to see if a Russian 7.62x54R fits in this magazine, since you said it's a re-barrel.
The 30-40 is a longer case by about .200 and that may be where the bind is.0 -
It would cost you, but the Winchester archives could provide you with the original configuration as part of the documentation letter. If it was first chambered for a rimless round with a case head of .473" diameter there would be problems with the .545" diameter 30-40 head or the .580" Russian head. Maybe Bert will be able to shed some light on other possibilities. 0 -
I just checked two Model 95s both in 30-40 and with original factory everything. One was a 1st model (flat side) the other the much more common 2nd model (scalloped side. Is he getting the cartridge cases pushed all the way to the rear when loading the mag? The rear portion of the magazine (where the rimmed case head goes)has a much thinner wall giving it the needed wider space for the rim. A rimmed 30-40 case head which I measured 0.541 (Remington) and 0.535 (Bitterroot) will not pass between the rest of the mag walls which I measured 0.477 on the Model 2, and 0.480 on the flat side. If he loads just one round in the mag, will that fit? Each following round must sit one rim thickness more forward than the one below it. 0 -
Truthful hit the nail on the head when he stated how the cartridges are to be loaded in the magazine. Failure to do so can cause problems. 0 -
thanks again. i'll check it all out as described and suggested. 0 -
thank you for all the advise, now, one more question. what is the function of the "MAGAZINE TIP SCREW(S). this model only has one(left side)but I believe it has been replaced by a non-functioning screw, so whatever it does may not be getting done properly.
thanks again.0
