Winchester 1894 takedown expertise
A friend showed me a recent aquisition 1894 takedown in 87x,xxx range.Very nice condition most of its original bright clean finish sans some flaking on receiver.
Here is question ,the barrel assembly plate sticks up a good 1/32" or better above receiver ring but flush everywhere else..I thought they were polished as an assembly but I've never owned one so not sure.
He is worried its a mix master someone assembled .

Ive got some excellent pics but have not had a chance to upload yet .
Finish matched perfectly on each half. Takedown plate has flaked to grey brown.
It has some special order features including a half round barrel.0 -
Has this rifle been "lettered"? A letter of authenticity would go a long way in this case. 0 -
I didnt realize you could get a letter on a serial that late ?

Undoubtedly, all of the caliber, and the Rifle versus Carbine production number ratios would change drastically if the records were available for serial numbers 354,000 - 2,600,298. The Polishing Room Serialization Record Books (PRSRBs) which contain nothing more than just the serial number, fortunately survive up to serial number 1,352,066, which was manufactured on December 29th, 1945. 0 -

Send me the full serial number, the caliber, and the pictures. I have a substantial number of serial numbers in my research database in that same range.0 -
The one photo you posted looks a bit odd at the very top front of the receiver. Maybe just an artifact of the photo angle and lighting, but it seems to suggest that the top of the receiver takes an unusual slight downward angle creating the non-flush appearance. 0 -
You are correct , poorly polished but is 100% factory original finish .

The front end (barrel assembly) does not appear to be original to the receiver frame. Again, what is the serial number ? 0 -
Bert H. I emailed that to you Friday.
Thought you were still looking.0
