So, you're saying that it still won't fit, even if you lower the butt end about 3/4"?

EDIT: Well, the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson pictures box styles, but not sizes. The box I have is a "Blue Two-Piece Bangor Punta" from 1966-1985, & measures 12 1/2" xx 4 5/8". vrichard's box is a "Blue Two-Piece" box from 1957-1966, which should measure the same. I'd like to see the bottom of his bottom box (to see if the SN is written with grease pencil) & the other end of the top box. It would help if we knew the SN.
EDIT2: Now we're getting somewhere. vrichard, you are right, your gun was made in 1952, but your box was made for a 1955 gun. The M14 wasn't made until 1957, so that's not a factor. The problem may be the hammer, a close up photo may help. It looks to me like the stocks or the grip frame on yours are larger than later production.0 -
I don't have a Pre Model 17 K-22 Masterpiece, but I do have a Model 17 (no dash) K-22 Masterpiece with Target Stocks in the original box. For reference the box measures 4 7/8" x 12 15/16" (across the top of the box) and the gun fits perfectly. 0 -

Your hammer spur appears to be longer than the normal ones found on K 22's. Such as this one. Could that be the problem?

The box i have is 12in.long,your box could be 12 1/2 long.I think maybe
some thing is not right with my box.
Thanks
Not sure how to tell you this, but I am thinking that the finish you have on that gun makes it a real late K-22, or a very early Model 17.
As Rufe-Snow also says, the hammer, is definitely a Model 17 hammer. Yours could have been redone at the factory, but usually the finish on them are not as polished, and the hammer spur has a different shape.

According to SCSW. In the 1930's a early version of the K 22, was made with what was called the "Long Action". It's not clear if the hammer spur was a different height, from the later short action hammer, though?
Perhaps your K 22 was assembled, with a old long action hammer?
That hammer on that one was different yet than either of the ones shown on this post. That model was called the K-22 Outdoorsman, had different grips and a ribless barrel, and the front sight had a small bead atop of it.0 -

Perhaps the bottom of the box is for a 6" Model 10/pre-10? 0
