I know it's an odd question, but I just got a Remington 870 and I am pretty new to shotguns. I took the shotgun apart to clean it when I received it and the barrel and magazine tube are a pretty tight fit. So I got to wondering if removing and reinstalling barrels too often could cause any wear issues on the receiver eventually.

As long as you followed the manufacturers written instructions for disassembly/reassembly, you should have no problem with the barrel.

Do not expect to swap out other 870 barrels, unless you bought them with the shotgun. In recent years, Remington has obfuscated the fact that they have made dimensional changes to 870/1100 parts.

When we carried 870's as patrol shotguns they were constantly being stripped and reassembled and we never had any issues, as long as the recommended procedures were followed. It takes a few times to balance the bolt on the operating rods while sliding it into the receiver and moving the shell latches aside, all with just two hands, but in the academy we were required to be able to strip and reassemble and fire one shot in under a minute and everyone made it. Just move slowly at first, follow the directions and you'll do fine.

nmyers, thanks for that info. I have run into that problem.
To the topic, I have never heard of any wear problems from too much takedown of the 870.
