10/22 Front Sight Base Removal
How is the base secured to the barrel? I want to remove one to thread the barrel. Is my assumption that it is silver soldered on and has to sweated off correct?

As far as I know you are correct. 0 -
Although it "Looks Like" a barrel band, I am thinking that this is integrally machined in. I have been wrong before, but also have tried to sweat one off before.
Your best bet would be to buy a barrel to do this with, or one that is already threaded. There are thousands out there to choose from.0 -
buy one done they are plentyfull 0 -
That raised portion is part of the barrel. Can be turned off with a lathe, but easier to just cut it off and thread. 0 -

Just cutting it off can get you 10 in the big pen...That will make the barrel under 16" if I am not mistaken.0 -
My 10/22's measure 17.5" from the face of the closed bolt to the rear of the front sight boss thus keeping the length over the 16" minimum if the barrel is cut. 0 -

Not all of them are like that. Several hundred thousand are in existence with 16" barrels.0 -
I agree that the base is integral to the barrel. Yesterday I found a guy that does lathe work and is willing to cut and turn down the barrel for threading. The barrel is 18.5". Thus if I have the barrel cut to 16.5", turned down 1" for threading and threaded, I'll be legal. I wanted a shorter barrel in the event Congress passes the Hearing Protection Act. 0
