He wants to put a 17 bolt in a 14 action.

The strippped bolt alone may be the same but there are differences in the receiver magazine well, left locking lug, ejector and extractor per "Bolt Action Rifles." This suggests that a simple exchange will not work without alterations to the receiver. I will try it when I get a chance but it is not convenient.

    303 British is rimmed.
    30-06 is semi rimmed.

    Not interchangeable.

A friend did this years ago. For what ever reason, he wanted a wildcat, shortened 30.06, target cartridge. It worked, but wasn't accurate enough for him, so a friend of his uses it for deer.

    IN gunsmith,

Please watch this video which will demonstrate the interchangeability and drawbacks:

the complete bolt will interchange with the noted differetency in the bolt face, magazine will need replacement. The firing pins have different sized 'tips'. a common converstion is to use a p-14 bolt in a m-1917 reciever for a magnum conversion.

I tried a 1917 bolt in a 1914 receiver and it fit and fired properly. As noted, there are other differences to be considered in building such a rifle.
