I don't know anything specific about this Model 21. But there have been a number of gunsmiths over the years, who have converted double barreled shotguns. Into centerfire rifles, not rimfires.

My WAG concerning the Model 21, is that it has been fitted with rimfire conversion units. They are inserts, that drop right into the 12 gauge barrels. The problem with these, has always been with the sights. The shotgun has to be altered, for some form of adjustable sights. Also since the barrels won't shoot to the same place with drop-in inserts, this has to be resolved in some manner.

Winchester did indeed build at least a few dozen Model 21 "Cape" rifles. There are three known that were made in 405 WCF, and at least a couple more in 45-70.

That would be sweet to have in the collection..one each of the 405, and 45-70...wow...very rare, I suppose.

I had the opportunity to handle one of the three in 405 WCF about 15-years ago. The bidding went through the roof on it so fast, I never even raised by bid card. The fellow who did get it already had one of the other three, and one in 45-70.

Were these double barrel rifles or Cape guns?
I understand the Cape Gun to be a combination rifle-shotgun SxS.

They were essentially a double rifle... 405 WCF x 405 WCF, but built on a shotgun frame.

If you worked at the New Haven factory in the early 1980s, you did not work for "Winchester"... instead, you worked for the U.S. Repeating Arms Company (U.S.R.A.Co.)

    Bert :

I NEVER stated that I worked @ The New Haven Factory !!!

I worked for "Olin" ( the then owners of Winchester Ammo ) !!!

I was Employed @ the Marion , ILL Ammo Plant @ The "TEST RANGE" as a
    "Gunnery Tech." ( a.k.a. = In-house Gunsmith ) ..........

A lot easier to tell that I worked for 'Winchester' ( true statement ) than to explain all the above ..................

I know you may be know as a 'Winchester' self proclaimed expert : but knowing the facts ,,, Now You Know Something Else !!!!!!!!

Im NOT trying to Be a SmartAzz by the way ... I know where I worked !!

    Thanks !!!
