I've found if you feed a buck lead they make pretty good food.

Personally, I am fairly well prepared. (And) Have been working towards that end for years now. (Not just Panic buying recently.) Have greatly increased my Woodstove/heating capacity. Wood on hand, Water storage, etc.

I feel good about having the things on hand that I do. (And) I have made monetary sacrifices in order to do so. Set your own priorities.

    As we all do.

Flour, baking powder, honey ( the only food that never spoils), sugar, vegetable soup, dried fruit, cooking oil, mayonnaise (for your tuna).

    Thank you Neal.

I am honestly thinking/asking what is the best food for the $$ to stock. I am well on my way - for years now, not a recent "Panic buying," thing.

I would appreciate any knowledgable input.

Have been way stocking up on food for my Dog. (Buddy.) Cooking oil is a good suggestion.

I can eat a can of Tuna right out of the can. Love the stuff. Mayonnaise will not keep. I collect/keep small condiment packs. Have a ton. Have a fair amount of mayonnaise packs. (Not counting on them.)

Really curious what you guys feel is the best food storage item for the $$. Not a novice. I have a fair amount (a'hem) on hand.

    Looking for input.

    Yep
Flour must be in airtight containers, not bags or the bugs will get in it.

Have a ton of mature fruit trees planted. I do not bake, and have heard of the long term short falls of stashing flour. (Would have bought one of the dark red wheat 25lb. bags of flour for $10.99 offerred recently at my local Food Lion otherwise. It all dissappeared shortly, so some here know what to do with it.

I am concentrating on non-refrigerated items.

What do you guys buy, and look for.

Peanut butter and bulk dried peanuts.

Yes Sir. I have a lot of peanut butter, and freeze dried peanuts. I do however need to buy a bunch more jars of Peanut Butter. (And) Peanuts. No need to be refrigerated upon opening. A HUGE bonus. Yes, I need to be buying many jars of Peanut Butter. Love the stuff anyway.

How about canned goods, etc. What is your best buy for the $$?

I do have a few (maybe 6) Pink Salmon cans on hand Serf. I have not seen it featured as a "deal," though.

Same area as the Tuna, Vienna Sausage, and etc. area.

    Will look. Thanks.

Sardines in oil. Living off the land you will need the fat and omegas unless you have laying hens.

Flour, no bueno.  It won't keep more than a year or two.  Buy a hand cranked grain grinder, and buy bulk hard red winter wheat, and corn.  Nitrogen packed, these will keep for 25 years.

I do go to the local grocery store and buy cases of canned salmon and corned beef.  Shelf life of 5 years, but, if you were hard up, would probably keep much, much longer than that.

I would say pasta.  Save the wheat berries to grind and make bread.  I put away a lot of macaroni 10 years ago, it's still good.  Macaroni because it will pour into used Arizona Ice tea jugs (very sturdy).  If you're planning on making bread you'll also need the yeast, salt, etc.

The 10 year old Vienna sausages didn't taste too good.

For convenience if feeding a crew, suggest looking into the packaged preppers variety packages that have the dried food.  Add water, heat and eat.

If you have bulk source at reasonable price include some powdered milk.

Don't forget OTC meds, and daily stuff like soaps, shampoo, mouthwash, shave cream, etc.  The prices just keep climbing so stocking up seems reasonable to me.

Top ramen, cup-o-noodles. Keep quite a while and easy add hot water preparation.

And, if you have to bug out, easy to carry.

I agree with the Sardines in oil Susie. I have a bunch of them. I also have tons of pasta. I save larger Jars (Pickles etc.) and keep most of my pasta in jars. While I do have an awful lot of Ramen noodles and cup-o-noodles, it is filling but very little nuritional value unless you add veggies/tuna/diced browned SPAM etc. For a "I'm hungry snack," with little prep, they are hard to beat @ 25 cents a pack.

Lately I have been stocking up on Saffron/yellow rice. It has recently been offered in large 1/2 gal. Plastic jugs, & I have a bunch of the Mahatma 10oz. Foil bags. Various variety of mashed potatoes in foil bags as well. Tons of Tuna Helper, Hamburger Helper. Remember that classic line from Vacation from Clark's BIL? "I don't know why they call it Hamburger helper, it's pretty good all by itself." Ha ha.

I have never experienced that with Peanut butter. I guess I have not had much that was older, as I tend to go through it when I have it. (Even if just by spoon.) Have two fairly decent size jars in the cupboard just now. One 1/2 gone. Goes rancid once opened? Or both? If it only goes bad once opened, I will start buying smaller jars to stock up with.

I do remember having it in some of our Military rations in squeeze tubes. Not sure how old.

I do remember opening a can of Beef in Gravy that had a date of 1954. I commented, "Hey this Cow is older than I am."

Ramen noodles with fine sliced Cabbage and onions is the bomb. If you have green onions the green tops, fine diced are an excellent addition.

A splash of House of Tsangs Schezuan sauce, and a shot of Kikkoman brewed Soy sauce. Mmnnn Mmnnn

I have not had any issues with peanut butter going rancid over several years of storage. Sometimes the oil separates a little, but nothing a little stir doesn't solve.

I'm not worried about what lies beyond 3 years. If the situation is that bad, some peanut butter and beans and rice ain't going to get it done anyhow.

During the initial KungFlu outbreak, the first things to disappear(other than paper towels and TP) were the components for making bread or biscuits. I have a rifle and many acres of wild game habitat but I can't grow flour or yeast.

I work in a grocery store and can attest to the fact that ingredients for bread making were in short supply and continue to be......especially YEAST. We also continually have problems getting certain kinds of bacon......and the bacon we do get, goes really fast.

I like canned tuna and sardines and think it is great to stock for preps. Dried pasta and rice will keep for years.......source of carbs. Dried legumes also keep for years.....good protein source.

I have 3 buckets of Mountain House freeze dried food for my sh$t hits the fan reserve. Breakfast, Classic, and Essential. Total of 91 servings of food. I bought it all last year before the craziness started. I think they are all unavailable now.
