Received a U.S. Census Bureau American Community Service Survey notice yesterday. Has anyone else here received one to fill out online? What is the minimal information that must be provided to the U.S. Census Bureau?
Third update: The information at the following link looks to be very helpful to my question, but I'd still like to hear from anyone here that might have been hit with one of these type surveys now or back in 2008.

ACS is not *The Census*, but it is administer by the Census Administration.
It's done yearly.
If you don't answer something, you'll get a follow up mailer. If you dont respond to that, you'll probably have a Census employee call or do a home visit.
People seem to get very bent out of shape over them.0 -

8. What is the penalty for not responding?
The census law (Title 13, United States Code, Section 224), coupled with the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 (Title 18, Sections 3551, 3559, and 3571), provides for penalties of up to $5,000 for failure to report, and $10,000 for intentionally providing false information.

Full diclosure: I filled out the one ACS I have ever received.
Also, I don't believe anyone has ever been criminally charged with non-compliance.
I filled it out because I think its good for policy makers to have this kind of information available.0 -

I threw one away back in probably 2008. Got a letter after a couple of months threatening legal action. Threw THAT away. Got a phone message, so I called them back, and explained that I was not going to respond further, and if someone showed up at my door I would politely order them off my property. Never heard another peep from them. Pissed me off so bad that in 2010, all I put on the REAL census form was my name and how many people lived at my address. 0 -

While I suspect the Department of Homeland Security can get any data they want, Title XIII prohibits anyone in the Census Bureau from disclosing any personally identifiable information about any survey respondent to the tune of a $500,000 fine and 10 years in prison.
The surveys are all about statistics, not individuals.0 -

It's all about where they will put the government grants... if you live in a rich area, your area won't get as much money from federal government. If you live in a poor area, your area will get more money from the government.0
