Winter project idea. Crazy, cool, or ?
Finally having access to a lathe and mill, I've been thinking about a project, mainly what to do with a spare sporter-weight .30-06 barrel I'll likely never use.
I want to take the barrel, machine a breech and block to fit, and eventually end up with something along the lines of a German Pak 40, but small enough I can set on and fire from my shooting bench. I'm thinking that around 1/10 scale would work, but I've only started thinking about it. Ideally, it would also have a functional recoil system as well.
Once I get going with it, what should I look for as far as a steel alloy is concerned, to fashion the breech and breech block from? How big would the breech and breech block have to be to handle standard '06 pressures?

get you a big ol chunk of 4340 HT and start whittling all the metal away that doesn't look like a breech block.[8D] 0 -

Does anyone here know where to find blueprint-type drawings of full-size artillery, cannons, and AT guns? I can find a bunch of pictures by searching Google, but not much in the way of any dimensions. 0 -
You could easily use dimensions from a falling block rifle. A Winchester 1885 or Ruger No 1 or 3 might be a good starting point. 0 -
I would think a good place to check for full scale Military archive blue prints would be some of the many modeling sites. Those guys take their craft real serious & build their projects like the real McCoy. 0 -

Just a thought- make sure the OAL is at least 26 inches- or you could get a visit from the ATF for making a SBR. Looks like a really cool project, tho. 0 -

I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm not too worried about the ammo not looking 100% correct.0 -

Thanks for bringing that up. Would the length of the carriage count towards the 26 inches?0 -
My understanding is the OAL WHEN IN FIRING CONFIGURATION. So the barrel length of 16 inches minimum, and OAL (including carriage) of at least 26".
And if you need dimensions, check with some of the military museums. An email to the staff may get you some measurements from some of the cannon they have on display.0 -
